Starring Bud Collyer [right], Joan Alexander Announcer Jackson Beck [left]

The Adventures of Superman was a long-running radio serial that originally aired from 1940 to 1951, adapted from the DC Comics character.  The serial came to radio as a syndicated show on New York City's WOR on February 12, 1940. On Mutual, it was broadcast from August 31, 1942, to February 4, 1949, as a 15-minute serial, running three or, usually, five times a week. From February 7 to June 24, 1949 it ran as a thrice-weekly half-hour show. The series shifted to ABC Saturday evenings on October 29, 1949, and then returned to afternoons, twice-a-week on June 5, 1950, continuing on ABC until March 1, 1951. In all, 2068 original episodes of The Adventures of Superman were aired on American radio. WIKIPEDIA

VIDEO: Adventures of Superman - first radio episode, The Baby from Krypton (1940) This historic broadcast from February 12, 1940, marked the Man of Steel's first appearance in a non-print medium (although a speaking role for the character would have to wait until the second episode). Along with the complete sound from the radio broadcast (minus some slight audio dropouts), this video provides brief glimpses of the actors who played Jor-El and Lara in the serial chapter "Superman Comes to Earth" (1948) and in the TV episode "Superman on Earth" (1952). This radio program, like most radio shows of the era, is in the public domain. The brief images from the serial chapter and TV episode are provided for purposes of historical reference only and not for purposes of commercial sale. No infringement is intended but only fair use.
